How Counseling Can Help You on Your Journey of Coming Out
Jorge Hincapie, LMHC
Licensed Mental Health Counselor
"Helping adults heal, feel better about themselves and their lives so they can create a life worth living."
Do you feel like you would like to change your life but you don’t know how? Are you feeling down, lonely, unmotivated, or not knowing what to do? Do you have problems at work or with your family or friends?
Life challenges can become difficult to handle when we are alone and, sometimes, we need someone objective who we can trust and who can help us.
My goal as a therapist is to get to the root of your difficulties by exploring your thoughts, feelings, and core beliefs, so that you can experience change and feel better about yourself and your life.
I invite you to work together with your strengths and unique capabilities for self-healing, in a nonjudgmental and confidential space, where we can safely explore your beliefs, thoughts, and emotions. I can help you learn how to reduce your symptoms by using a variety of evidenced based therapeutic skills and techniques.

I offer individual therapy, in person and online, in English and Spanish, for ages 18 and up. My schedule is Monday to Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The setup of the sessions depends on your needs, preferences, and mental health; we can work it out at your convenience. Some of my clients go back and forth between in-person and telehealth sessions, while other clients do their online sessions at lunchtime from their cars. If you prefer, we can set up weekly sessions on the same day and time. If your schedule changes every week, we can move it around as needed.
If you opt for telehealth sessions, I will send you a link to a private, safe and easy-to-use platform to have our sessions online. You can connect from your smartphone or your computer.
If you want to have in-person sessions, for your convenience, I work at three different locations at the Bayview Therapy group, in Florida’s Broward County:
-
Fort Lauderdale office: 2419 E. Commercial Blvd. #203, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308

Coral Springs office: 7451 Wiles Road #206, Coral Springs, FL 33067
-
City of Plantation office: 1776 North Pine Island Rd. #318, Plantation, FL 33322
I work at a different office on different days and don’t work on Fridays or weekends. The length of my sessions is 55 minutes unless you need a longer session and we agree to something else. The number of sessions needed for your treatment depends on what brings you to therapy.
Counseling for Adults:
My clients often have emotional wounds or unresolved issues that they would like to change but don’t know how, typically rooted in childhood. They may feel down, lonely, unmotivated, or unsure about what to do. They may have problems at work, with family or friends, or with their partners.
All of my clients want to feel better about themselves and their lives, and they want to create lives worth living. Because they don’t yet have the tools needed to make this goal a reality, they often feel stuck and overwhelmed, and they seek professional help and guidance. This is what I can offer you.
During the past decade, I have worked with clients who struggled with trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief, interpersonal conflicts, low self-esteem, substance abuse, and many other mental health issues. I have a vast number of tools and techniques to help you with. My approach to your therapy goes beyond talk therapy. I will address your issues from different perspectives and help you to understand your past experiences. Plus, I will help you explore the various aspects of you that make who you are, especially the aspects that are causing conflict.
Trauma & PTSD Counseling:
If you experienced an event or circumstance that resulted in some kind of harm, physically or emotionally, or if it was life-threatening, you might have trauma. Trauma is an invisible wound that you sustain as a result of something you witnessed or experienced. And trauma can cause other mental health issues you might not be aware of, such as anxiety, depression, sleep issues, anger, low self-esteem, and interpersonal conflicts.
Whether it was a single incident, or a repeated and prolonged pattern such as domestic violence or abuse, or complex trauma due to multiple events in your life, I can help you on your healing journey. I will teach you how to ground yourself, how to reconnect with your body to understand its language and its messages, and how to identify when your body is automatically and instinctively activated as a response to fear. Trauma is not only stored in your memory but also in your body.
We will identify your triggers and stressors and will work on widening your window of tolerance, as well as processing and regulating your emotions and memories. In a safe and nonjudgmental space, we will start to do emotional work together at your own pace. I will help you get to the root of the pain or issue by exploring your thoughts, feelings, and core beliefs as a result of the trauma. I use different therapeutic techniques such as EMDR Therapy to help you make sense of your experiences, feelings, and memories.
“Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you!” - Gabor Maté, MD
I invite you to work together with your strengths and unique capabilities for self-healing. Even if you are not yet ready to talk about the details of your trauma, we can still work on your trauma.
Hispanic or Latinx Culture:
As a U.S. citizen who immigrated here from a Spanish-speaking country more than two decades ago, I know the frustration of having to learn a new language and adjusting to a new culture, and of experiencing discrimination because you cannot communicate in a common language and are treated differently.
I know what it is like to lack social, financial, and emotional support when you want to better yourself. When you are in a foreign land, everything feels strange and you might not know what to do or who to talk to. The beginning is not easy, and finding employment opportunities, housing, and new friends can be a challenge.
I understand where you’re coming from and I have felt your struggles and needs. I know what it is like to start from zero. Wherever you are in your process, I will help you to clarify what you want and need. I will help you to find your voice and will emotionally support you, and I will empower you to build the life that you want and deserve.
LGBTQIA+ Community:
As a gay male who experienced discrimination, fear, and lack of social understanding and support in my home country, I have been through many personal experiences that have given me the tools to work with my community here. A lot of people don’t yet understand how deeply challenging it is when you realize that you are different from the norm, and that society sees you as a problem when it doesn’t have to be that way.
Navigating your own sexual orientation and identity, and growing and evolving until you accept yourself and you feel comfortable in your own skin, can be a lengthy, challenging and painful process. Many LGBTQIA+ people have already paved that road, and several laws and organizations have been created to support change and to make it easier.
If you fall into this category, you are not alone, and we can walk that path together. I can help you to find your own identity and self-acceptance. I can help you to identify your wants and needs, to align your brain and your body with each other, and to get a better sense of who you want to be. You can learn to express yourself in your own unique ways. I have also been fortunate to have worked in therapy with identity-questioning clients and transgender clients who needed emotional support and self-acceptance.
As part of my personal journey, I was very fortunate to have found a partner who wanted to be a father like me. About seven years ago, we adopted a newborn baby. My son gave my life a different meaning and purpose, and I adore him and want the best for him. He made me a dad and introduced me to the world of parenting. As a therapist, I can also assist you with your parenting skills. I have taught parenting skills to straight and gay parents, and have guided them through their daily interactions. Parenting is not easy, and gay parenting can be a little more complicated. Regardless of where you are in this journey, I'm here for you.
Substance Abuse:
Prior to entering the world of private practice, I worked for 5 years at a rehab center with clients who struggle with various types of addictions. I started as a therapist at the Detox level of care, then PHP and residential treatment, and eventually, I became the Clinical Manager.
I understand addictions and the gradual process of becoming chemically dependent on a substance. I can help you explore all areas of your life so that you can stop using drugs and alcohol to numb, to medicate, or to escape your pain. I will help you to address the root causes of your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual pain that you live with on a daily basis. I will help you to let go and cope through healthy living skills.
Scientifically speaking, chemical dependency does not have a cure, but you don’t have to let it define you or dictate your life anymore. Countless numbers of people choose to be sober and have learned to live life on their own terms. I will help you create the change that you need, one little step at a time, so you can feel in control and have the life that you want.
My Story
I was born in Colombia, South America, and most of my family still live there. I relocated to the United States in 1999. With a Bachelor’s in Systems Engineering and Computer Science, I worked in the IT field for about 17 years. After going through a midlife crisis, I felt like I was not living the life I wanted, and I went to therapy to understand myself and to change my feelings. At age 42, I decided to reinvent myself and earned a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University, following my passion to make a difference as a licensed counselor.
I love helping people from all paths of life to feel better and to create lives worth living. I am passionate about the therapeutic work that I do, and I thrive on the opportunity to assist you to improve and achieve the life that you desire. Simply put, the reason why I became a psychotherapist is because I love helping others.
With more than 50 years of life experience, I have learned to use the knowledge that life has given me to serve the needs of my clients. In addition to my education and experience as a mental health counselor, being an immigrant, Latino, bilingual, gay, a parent and computer science graduate has shaped my character and my thinking. My life experience has helped me grow and given me the ability and tools to understand, empathize with and share the feelings of my clients.

Fun Facts
The weekends are for spending time with my family and with my 7-year-old son. Aware of how quickly kids grow up, I want to take advantage of the fact that he is still young by creating a rich tapestry of memories and experiences for both of us.
I love going to the beach, theaters, restaurants and family events. Food is one of my passions, and trying new snacks when I go out is always fun. Plus, I love adrenaline, everything from rollercoasters to whitewater rafting. I’ve even gone skydiving, twice.
My bucket list includes the goal of traveling around the world, staying in each country for a few weeks to know the culture, cuisine and locals well. And it would be nice to learn and communicate in their language, maybe starting with some French, Italian and Portuguese.
I make sure that my work and my personal life are balanced. As a rule, I only work Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, I exercise, take clinical workshops/courses, and do networking with my peers and friends. Giving myself this gift of a personal day enhances my well-being as well as my private practice.
